Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhwinder Singh Sukhu suggested on Monday that India should consider holding elections using ballot papers, expressing concerns about the reliability of Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs). His comments came after Karnataka’s Home Minister, G. Parameshwara, raised questions about the security of the technology used in elections. Sukhu emphasized that if doubts about EVM integrity continue, the traditional method of using ballot papers should be reintroduced to eliminate skepticism and ensure transparency in the electoral process.
In response to questions about the Maharashtra poll results and the absence of an opposition leader, Sukhu stated that such political dynamics are common in any democracy. He also referenced tech entrepreneur Elon Musk, who has acknowledged the vulnerability of technology to hacking. Sukhu pointed out that even Musk recognizes the risks involved, highlighting the need to safeguard the electoral system’s integrity. Sukhu made these remarks while inaugurating the Zila Parishad Bhawan in Shimla, a key event marking the Himachal government’s governance milestones. He also discussed the Congress Party’s two-year tenure in the state, with a special program planned for December 11 in Bilaspur. Sukhu criticized the previous BJP government for leaving unfinished projects, emphasizing that his government is focused on completing them for the state’s development.
