President Xi Jinping emphasized the importance of expanding the bloc to include more countries, particularly those from the Global South at the BRICS summit on Wednesday. He announced that the summit had decided to invite several nations to become partner countries, highlighting this move as a significant step in BRICS’ evolution.

Xi called for BRICS, which already includes Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, along with new members like Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE, to enhance its representation in global governance. He urged member states to act as a vanguard for reforming international structures and to promote solidarity and cooperation among developing nations.

The Chinese president stressed the need for a multilateral mechanism that prioritizes peace, advocating for principles aimed at reducing conflict, particularly regarding the Ukraine crisis. He also highlighted the urgency of reforming the international financial architecture, proposing a strengthened New Development Bank to align the global financial system with emerging economic realities.

Xi announced plans for China to establish ten overseas learning centers in BRICS countries over the next five years, aimed at training 1,000 education administrators, teachers, and students. He concluded by advocating for BRICS to be a leader in sustainable development, focusing on cooperation in green industries and clean energy initiatives.
