Dr YC Yogananda Reddy, President of Karnataka Medical Council, stressed the importance of adopting a medical education system that focuses on people and society rather than just patients.
He was speaking at state conference of family doctors, which was held as part of the 20th anniversary celebration of the Mangalore Family Doctors’ Association.
The event was organised under the guidance of the Indian Medical Association’s (IMA) State Family Doctors’ Association at the IMA auditorium.
According to Dr Reddy, there are currently 0.7 percent doctors for every thousand people in India. He also expressed concern over the presence of fake doctors, despite efforts to combat this issue for the past 70 years.
Dr M Shantharam Shetty, a veteran Orthopaedic Surgeon, pointed out that the medical system was not properly managed. He stated that there are currently 13.8 lakh allopathic doctors in the country, along with an equal number of AYUSH, Unani and Homeopathy doctors. Dr Shetty emphasised the need to focus on the family doctor system, which he believes is the foundation of the country’s health sector. He suggested that implementing the family doctor system in every village could bring significant changes to the health sector.
Dr Shetty also highlighted that prioritising the health of citizens could strengthen the country in various ways and urged the government to be proactive in this regard. Speaker UT Khader and IMA State President Dr S Srinivasa, among others were present.
