A Material Recovery Facility (MRF) to manage solid waste generated in 57 gram panchayats of Bantwal and Ullal taluks is all set to be made operational soon.
The new MRF facility, which is being set up at Shambhur in Bantwal taluk, will be able to process an average of seven tons of dry waste a day. The first MRF of Dakshina Kannada Zilla Panchayat at Thenka Yedapadavu to manage dry waste collected from 51 gram panchayats was made operational in January, 2023.
The facility at Shambhur, which is being developed on a one-acre land at an estimated cost of Rs 1.9 crore, will soon be made functional. The project is being developed through funding by Dakshina Kannada Zilla Panchayat’s Swachh Bharat Mission Rural scheme through the department of rural drinking water and sanitation.
The facility has been sanctioned to manage dry waste generated in 40 gram panchayats of Bantwal taluk and 17 in Ullal. Official sources said that the installation of various machines required for the MRF and civil works are nearing completion. The gram panchayats of Bantwal and Ullal will transport the segregated dry waste collected from nearly one lakh houses and commercial establishments to the facility once it is made operational, sources said.
The MRF will operate on a unique ‘Zero Rupee Model’ of the Dakshina Kannada Zilla Panchayat, wherein panchayats can participate without any financial constraints. Bantwal MLA U Rajesh Naik said that work was already completed. A pooja ceremony was already held and the facility will start functioning soon, he said.
