UK Urges India’s Cooperation in Canada Row

The UK has emphasized that India’s cooperation with Canada’s legal process is the appropriate next step amidst the ongoing diplomatic dispute between the two nations. The UK’s Foreign, Commonwealth, and Development Office (FCDO) issued a statement on Wednesday, expressing support for Canada’s ongoing investigation and confidence in the Canadian judicial system. The statement followed India’s expulsion of six Canadian diplomats and the withdrawal of its High Commissioner to Canada, labeling Canada’s allegations as politically motivated.

The dispute centers around the killing of Sikh separatist Hardeep Singh Nijjar, which escalated after Canada accused Indian government agents of covert operations. India has categorically rejected these claims, describing them as politically driven by Canada’s internal agenda. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) in India has criticized Canada for failing to provide evidence to support its claims, despite repeated requests.

The UK and Canada are part of the “Five Eyes” intelligence alliance, which includes Australia, New Zealand, and the United States. The UK’s stance came shortly after a call between Prime Minister Keir Starmer and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, where both leaders emphasized the rule of law and agreed to remain in contact pending the outcome of the investigation. The UK’s statement underscores the importance of respecting sovereignty while pursuing legal processes.
