Cabinet approves a six-lane bridge, featuring four railway lines

New Delhi

On Wednesday, the Union Cabinet approved the construction of a rail-cum-road bridge over the Ganga, connecting Varanasi and Chandauli districts in Uttar Pradesh. This ambitious project will feature a six-lane highway on the upper deck and a four-line railway on the lower deck, showcasing advanced engineering.

Information and Broadcasting Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw explained that the existing Malviya Bridge, built 137 years ago, is a crucial link for rail and road traffic. However, it is now inadequate due to heavy congestion, with the route between Varanasi and DDU Junction operating at 163% capacity. The new bridge, costing Rs 2,642 crore, aims to alleviate this saturation.

Vaishnaw noted that the upgrades would improve operational efficiency on one of the busiest railway sections in India, which is vital for passenger travel and freight transport, including coal, cement, and food grains. The project supports Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision for a New India, promoting local employment and self-reliance.

Additionally, it aligns with the PM-Gati Shakti National Master Plan for enhanced multi-modal connectivity, ensuring seamless transport for people and goods. The project will expand the Indian Railways network by approximately 30 km, while also contributing to climate goals by reducing CO2 emissions, equating to planting 6 crore trees.
