China, Russia advocate regional cooperation at SCO Summit

At the 23rd meeting of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Council of Heads of Government, Chinese Premier Li Qiang and Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin stressed the importance of regional cooperation and economic integration. Held on Wednesday in Islamabad with Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif as the chair, the summit emphasized infrastructural improvements for better connectivity and stronger partnerships to counter terrorism.

Premier Li highlighted China’s Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) as a catalyst for regional growth and connectivity, aligning with Pakistan’s focus on the second phase of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC). He called on SCO members to explore new areas of cooperation, such as technology, digital trade, and climate change, while reaffirming China’s commitment to regional stability amidst geopolitical shifts.

Russian PM Mishustin echoed the need for deeper collaboration within the SCO framework, focusing on economic ties, trade, and investment opportunities among member states. He underscored Russia’s dedication to addressing regional challenges through innovation and cooperation, including support for a stable Afghanistan as a crucial transit hub for trade. Mishustin also stressed Russia’s interest in joint efforts on energy, infrastructure, and climate action, recognizing the need for unified responses to global challenges.

The next SCO Council of Heads of Government meeting is set for 2025 in Russia, with a continued emphasis on enhancing regional stability, economic integration, and addressing pressing issues such as climate change. The summit highlighted the strategic priorities of China and Russia within the SCO, advocating for stronger regional alliances and economic partnerships.
