London

The University of Oxford has unveiled the 38 finalists competing for its new Chancellor, including Indian-origin contenders Ankur Shiv Bhandari, Nirpal Singh Paul Bhangal, and Pratik Tarvadi. The list notably excludes former Pakistani PM Imran Khan. Prominent British political figures such as Lord William Hague and Lord Peter Mandelson are among the shortlisted candidates.

Candidates were selected based on criteria like outstanding achievements in their respective fields, a deep appreciation for Oxford’s academic mission, and the ability to enhance the university’s global reputation. While specific reasons for disqualifications were not provided, experts suggest that Khan’s legal issues and criminal convictions in Pakistan could have been factors in his exclusion.

The election process involves members of Oxford’s Convocation, which includes university staff and alumni. During the first round of voting, starting in late October, voters can rank as many candidates as they wish. The top five candidates will be announced in early November and proceed to a second voting round set for mid-November. The final results will be revealed by the end of November.

The Chancellor role at Oxford is largely ceremonial but carries significant influence. It involves presiding over university ceremonies, chairing the Committee to Elect the Vice-Chancellor, and serving as an ambassador for the university in national and international forums. The incoming Chancellor will serve a fixed term of up to 10 years, following recent amendments to the university’s statutes.
