Oct rain damages 180 houses, crops in 25,000 hectares: DC

Heavy rainfall during the first half of October has partially damaged over 180 houses in Dharwad district. The district administration has assured that compensation will be provided to the affected families based on the damage assessment report.

Deputy Commissioner Divya Prabhu has stated that more heavy rainfall is expected in the district until October 16, with a focus on the Bennihalla and Tupparihalla catchment areas. Taluk administrations have been instructed to coordinate with district officials from different departments and stay at their assigned centers to take necessary precautions.

Daily updates are being received from the state meteorological department about rainfall levels in the catchment areas. The gram panchayat disaster management teams are creating awareness about potential floods by alerting villagers through drum-beating.

Efforts are being made to prevent any loss of life. Helpline centers have been set up at both district and taluk levels to provide precautionary information. Five rescue teams, equipped with two boats, 50 life jackets, 60 lifeguards, 150 raincoats, and other necessary equipment, have been prepared.From October 1 to 14, Dharwad district experienced its highest rainfall in recent years. Dharwad taluk received 141.2 mm of rainfall, compared to the usual 61.2 mm, while Hubli taluk recorded 130.6 mm of rainfall, much higher than the normal 61.6 mm. Preliminary reports indicate that crops on 25,525 hectares in the district have been damaged due to excessive rain.
