In Dakshina Kannada, 190 government schools damaged by this monsoon’s rains are awaiting approximately Rs 4 crore in funds for repairs. Sources indicate that funding may not be allocated in the immediate future.
Earlier, the government sanctioned funds for 106 schools with severe roof and structural damage, and repair work is currently underway. However, the remaining 190 schools, which have sustained minor damages, including issues with the school compound, are still in need of financial assistance.
A case worker from the Department of School Education and Literacy reported that a total of 296 government schools have been affected since the start of the academic year. Of these, 106 experienced major damages that warranted Rs 1.9 crore for repairs. The ongoing repairs prioritize classrooms and essential structures frequented by students, while exterior damages to walls, grounds, wells, and washrooms remain unaddressed.
The Zilla Panchayat of Dakshina Kannada has submitted three lists of damaged schools to the district administration. CEO K Anandh noted that the first list has been approved and funds allocated, while the second and third lists are expected to be approved soon. Repair work will commence once the rain subsides completely.
