After a video surfaced showing workers in Uppinangady village dumping waste into the Nethravati River, residents are demanding immediate action to address the pollution. Although the Uppinangady gram panchayat regularly collects segregated waste from homes and businesses, the footage shared by social activist S Noor Uppinangady reveals a troubling practice of dumping collected waste into the riverbed.
Uppinangady emphasized the seriousness of the issue, noting, ‘We have a systematic mechanism to keep the village clean, and it is unfortunate that collected waste has been dumped into the river recently. I am sharing this video to raise awareness about health and cleanliness, and I urge the authorities to take immediate action.’
Shashidhar Shetty, Secretary of the National Environment Care Federation (NECF), confirmed the incident and expressed concern over the lack of accountability for such actions. He stated that this incident highlights a broader issue of river pollution, which affects the community’s drinking water source. Shetty pointed out that inadequate drainage systems contribute to the ongoing pollution and stressed the need for increased awareness about protecting water resources.
The community’s call for action underscores the urgent need for proper waste management practices and greater vigilance to safeguard the environment.
