Fishermen protest against illegal fishing

Must read

Udupi
Fishermen from Nadadoni and Gangolli regions of Byndoor united to block over one hundred bull trawl fishing boats. Anger over the impact of bull trawl fishing on marine life and fish breeding was expressed during the protest. Traditional Nadadoni fishermen reported severe effects on their livelihoods due to bull trawl and light fishing methods, often returning empty-handed from fishing trips.
Nagesh Kharvi, President of the Byndoor Nadadoni Fishermen’s Association, called for strict action against illegal fishing practices. Meetings had been held with Nadadoni fishermen from Mangaluru to Karwar to appeal for a ban on bull trawl fishing, but trawlers continued to operate at around 45 locations and 29 longitudes. This situation has caused protests from Nadadoni fishermen, who alerted authorities, but no action has been taken.
The fishermen warned that continued illegal fishing could lead to loss of livelihoods, leaving many without income. Bull trawl and light fishing have been declared unscientific and banned by the Supreme Court and the central government, yet some continue these practices in secret. Strict measures, such as revoking licenses and imposing fines, are needed to end these activities.
The fishermen urged the government and ministers to take appropriate action to prevent conflict between bull trawlers and traditional fishermen. Leaders from three districts are preparing for further protests if the situation is not addressed.
