The Badminton Federation of India (BAI) has announced a cash reward of ₹50 lakh for Indian para-shuttlers who secured medals at the recent Paris Paralympics. India achieved a record haul of five medals — one gold, two silver, and two bronze — including podium finishes in the women’s events for the first time in the country’s Paralympic history.
Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma, President of BAI and Chief Minister of Assam, lauded the athletes for their historic achievements. ‘BAI will honor the 2024 medallists with a total cash reward of ₹50 lakh,’ BAI stated in an official release.
The virtual award ceremony will also provide a platform to interact with the players and address their future development needs.
Nitesh Kumar took gold in the Men’s Singles SL3 category, while Suhas Yathiraj earned silver in the Men’s Singles SL4. In a milestone for Indian women, Thulasimathi Murugesan won silver in Women’s Singles SU5, and Manisha Ramadass and Nithya Sre Sivan claimed bronze in their respective categories.
Nitesh will receive ₹15 lakh, Suhas and Thulasimathi will get ₹10 lakh each, and Manisha and Nithya will receive ₹7.5 lakh each. BAI Secretary General Sanjay Mishra reaffirmed the organization’s commitment to supporting para-badminton’s growth across India.
