Manoj Kumar elected Mayor, Bhanumathi Dy Mayor of MCC

Manoj Kumar from Derebail ward has been elected as the Mayor of Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC), while Bhanumathi from Bolar ward has been elected as the Deputy Mayor. The elections for these positions, along with four standing committee members for the 25th term of the MCC, took place on September 19 in the Mangala hall.

Manoj Kumar, representing the BJP, was the sole candidate for the mayoral position, which was reserved for Scheduled Castes. The Congress party did not nominate any candidates, leading to Kumar’s unopposed election, as announced by Regional Commissioner Ramesh, the election officer.

For the Deputy Mayor position, nominations were submitted by Congress’s Zeenath Shamsuddin and BJP’s Bhanumathi and Vanitha Prasad. After Vanitha Prasad withdrew her nomination, Bhanumathi secured 47 votes from BJP members, while 14 Congress members supported Shamsuddin. One SDPI member abstained from voting, allowing Bhanumathi to win the Deputy Mayor election.

The MCC consists of 60 elected members, with 44 from the BJP, 14 from the Congress, and two from the SDPI. MP Capt Brijesh Chowta and MLAs Vedavyas Kamath and Dr. Y Bharath Shetty participated in the voting, while MLCs Manjunath Bhandary and Ivan D’Souza were absent. Additionally, four standing committee members were elected unopposed.
