Former Argentine midfielder Juan Roman Riquelme is confident that Lionel Messi will represent Argentina in the 2026 World Cup. As Messi continues to excel at Inter Miami in Major League Soccer, Riquelme believes the 37-year-old is constantly evolving and still has more to give.

Messi’s international success began in 2021 when he led Argentina to their 15th Copa America title, ending a decade-long trophy drought. In 2022, he achieved his ultimate goal, guiding Argentina to World Cup victory in a thrilling final against France. Messi and his team defended their Copa America title in 2024, defeating Colombia 1-0.

Despite uncertainty about Messi’s involvement in the 2026 World Cup, Riquelme is convinced the legendary forward will participate. Messi is always reinventing himself, Riquelme said. He loves to compete and still has the desire to win more. I’m sure he’ll play in the next World Cup.

Messi recently returned to action after recovering from an ankle injury sustained in the Copa America final. He made an impressive comeback, scoring two goals in Inter Miami’s 3-1 win over the Philadelphia Union. So far in 2024, Messi has played 13 matches for Inter Miami, contributing 24 goals and assists, with 14 goals and 10 assists.
