Mission Mausam with Rs 2,000 cr initiative to transform India into a ‘Weather-Ready, Climate-Smart’ Nation

The Ministry of Earth Sciences (MoES) announced Mission Mausam at a national press briefing held at Prithvi Bhavan in New Delhi on Friday. Dr. M. Ravichandran, MoES Secretary, Dr. Mritunjay Mohapatra, Director General of the India Meteorological Department (IMD), and Dr. V.S. Prasad, Head of the National Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasting (NCMRWF), detailed the mission’s goals.

Approved by the Union Cabinet on September 11, Mission Mausam has been allocated a budget of ₹2,000 crore for the next two years. The initiative aims to enhance India’s weather and climate forecasting capabilities, making the country ‘Weather Ready’ and ‘Climate Smart.’ The mission will run from 2024 to 2026.

Mission Mausam’s objectives include developing advanced weather surveillance technologies, enhancing atmospheric observation systems, and deploying new radars and satellites. The project will establish a comprehensive network, including 50 Doppler Weather Radars, 60 Radio Sonde/Radio Wind stations, and various other meteorological instruments.

Dr. Ravichandran highlighted that the mission will improve weather forecasts and air quality data. It will also integrate advanced models and AI/ML technologies to enhance predictive accuracy. Capacity building and data dissemination will be scaled up to ensure comprehensive weather monitoring.

The implementation of Mission Mausam will be overseen by the IMD, NCMRWF, and the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology, with support from other MoES institutions and international partners.
