India has extended the anti-subsidy duty on the Chinese chemical ‘Atrazine Technical,’ used in pesticides, for an additional five years to protect domestic producers. The decision, based on a recommendation from the Directorate General of Trade Remedies (DGTR), was confirmed by a finance ministry notification.

The finance ministry’s notification states that the duty, which can reach up to 11.94 percent, will be in effect for five years from the date of the publication. The DGTR’s investigation found that the existing duties have facilitated the entry of more Indian producers into the market and have contributed to the expansion of domestic industry capacity.

The extension follows an earlier imposition of the duty in September 2019 due to concerns that subsidized Chinese exports were negatively impacting Indian businesses. In line with global trade practices, such countervailing duties are allowed to counteract the effects of subsidies provided by foreign governments. Additionally, the ministry has extended similar duties on welded stainless steel pipes and tubes from China and Vietnam for five years.
