For the first time since the 2005 US Open, a Grand Slam will feature an all-American men’s semi-final. Taylor Fritz and Frances Tiafoe will face off on Friday in the US Open semi-finals, guaranteeing an American will advance to their first Grand Slam final. The winner will be the first American man to reach a Grand Slam singles final since Andy Roddick at Wimbledon in 2009.
Fritz secured his place in the semi-finals with a tough win over fourth seed Alexander Zverev, taking the match 7-6(2), 3-6, 6-4, 7-6(3). Tiafoe joined Fritz in the semi-finals after Grigor Dimitrov retired with the score at 6-3, 6-7(5), 6-3, 4-1. The last all-American men’s semi-final at a Grand Slam occurred 19 years ago when Andre Agassi defeated Robby Ginepri at the US Open.
The winner between Fritz and Tiafoe will advance to Sunday’s final, aiming to be the first American man to win a Grand Slam singles title since Roddick’s 2003 US Open victory. Fritz leads their head-to-head series 6-1, with their most recent match in Acapulco last year, where Fritz won 6-3, 6-4.
In other news, Indian player Rohan Bopanna and his Indonesian partner Aldila Sutjiadi lost to Americans Taylor Townsend and Donald Young in the US Open 2024 mixed doubles semi-finals, ending India’s representation at the tournament.
