New Zealand cricket is facing a growing dilemma as top players increasingly turn down central contracts in favor of club deals. With a demanding schedule of nine Test matches ahead, including an upcoming Test against Afghanistan in Greater Noida, Test captain Tim Southee has highlighted the challenge posed by the evolving landscape of international cricket. He remains hopeful that cricket boards and franchise leagues will find a way to collaborate effectively.
Southee emphasized that while there are more lucrative offers than in the past, the focus remains on giving their all for New Zealand. Key players like Kane Williamson, Trent Boult, Lockie Ferguson, and Adam Milne have recently declined central contracts, though Williamson will still participate in the upcoming Test series.
The series includes six Tests in the subcontinent, followed by matches in Sri Lanka and India. Southee views this as an exciting opportunity and a significant challenge, given that New Zealand hasn’t faced such a lengthy subcontinental tour in his tenure. He also praised Afghanistan’s growing strength in international cricket, particularly their spinners, who are expected to be a key challenge. With quality spin options like Ajaz Patel, Rachin Ravindra, and Mitchell Santner, alongside pace bowlers, New Zealand is prepared for the spin-friendly conditions of the subcontinent.
The Test against Afghanistan runs from September 9 to 13, before New Zealand travels to Sri Lanka and returns to India.
