Seoul
South Korea and the United States have reaffirmed their commitment to bilateral cooperation in nuclear power during their seventh Nuclear Security Working Group Meeting held this week. The discussions, co-led by Lee Cheol, Director General for International Organizations and Nuclear Affairs at South Korea’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and Andrew Vogt, Associate Assistant Deputy Administrator of the US Department of Energy, took place on Wednesday and Thursday at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in California, Seoul’s foreign ministry said on Friday.
This meeting is part of the broader High-Level Bilateral Commission, established in 2016 after a revision of the two countries’ nuclear energy cooperation agreement.
Both sides agreed to continue working on minimizing the production of highly enriched uranium, enhancing cybersecurity measures for nuclear facilities, and strengthening activities with the International Atomic Energy Agency. Additionally, they planned a joint drill next month aimed at combating nuclear and radiological terrorism, further deepening their collaboration in nuclear security.
