The women crew of the Indian Naval Sailing Vessel (INSV) Tarini received a warm felicitation from the Parliament of Western Australia on Friday, for their groundbreaking global circumnavigation expedition, Navika Sagar Parikrama II.

Lieutenant Commanders Dilna K and Roopa A, the two-member team steering this historic voyage, were present at the ceremony in Fremantle, Western Australia, the expedition’s first port of call. The mission, which commenced from Goa on October 2, was flagged off by Admiral Dinesh K. Tripathi, Chief of the Naval Staff.

Western Australian legislator Sue Ellery praised the crew, calling them “trailblazers” whose journey will inspire countless women to envision careers in the Indian Navy.

The crew has covered 4,900 nautical miles over a challenging 38-day nonstop voyage, crossing the Equator on October 24 and the Tropic of Capricorn on October 27. They navigated diverse weather conditions, including winds reaching speeds of 40 knots, showcasing remarkable endurance and professionalism.

The Navika Sagar Parikrama II expedition aims to promote gender equality, environmental awareness, and maritime goodwill. It also serves to encourage more women to pursue roles in the Indian Navy.

The journey is a continuation of India’s commitment to empowering women in the armed forces. “Their determination and resilience reflect the values of the Indian Navy and the spirit of adventure,” said a spokesperson for the High Commission of India in Canberra.

The crew is set to continue their expedition, representing a beacon of inspiration and courage on their historic voyage.
