Pakistan urges military veterans for security of Chinese nationals

In light of repeated attacks on Chinese nationals working in Pakistan, authorities in Sindh have recommended hiring former military personnel for their security. The decision follows a review meeting chaired by Sindh Inspector General of Police Ghulam Nabi Memon on Friday, aimed at addressing ongoing security concerns.

“All private security agencies, project managers, and sponsors responsible for protecting Chinese nationals have been advised to employ former servicemen,” said Memon. The move comes after mounting pressure from China, following recent incidents targeting their citizens, including the tragic deaths of two engineers in a suicide bombing near Karachi airport last month.

China has voiced strong concerns over the safety of its nationals in Pakistan, especially those working on the $60 billion China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC). Separatist groups and terrorists have frequently targeted Chinese workers, with Karachi witnessing its third such attack this year on November 5.

To enhance security measures, the Intelligence Bureau and the Special Branch of police have been auditing private security arrangements for Chinese nationals. The review aims to ensure that experienced and qualified personnel are deployed. Sindh authorities have also set up a hotline for Chinese citizens to quickly reach law enforcement in emergencies.

Efforts are underway to implement “concrete steps” to prevent future attacks, with support pledged from both Pakistani and Chinese governments. The initiative underscores the critical importance of protecting foreign investments and bilateral ties in the region.
