According to a World Health Organization (WHO) report released on Wednesday, India recorded 908 new Covid-19 cases and 2 deaths between June and July. The report highlights that from June 24 to July 21, 85 countries tested an average of 17,358 samples per week for SARS-CoV-2. During this period, global new cases rose by 30%, with a 26% increase in deaths.
Globally, over 1,86,000 new cases and 2,800 deaths were reported. The WHO noted that since the pandemic began, over 775 million cases and 7 million deaths have been confirmed worldwide. The most reported variant is JN.1, found in 135 countries.
In India, Covid cases are rising in several states, including Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, and Maharashtra. The KP.1 and KP.2 strains, descended from the JN.1 variant, are driving the surge. However, hospitalizations and illness severity have not increased.
