New Delhi
Kapil Dev, the legendary World Cup-winning captain of India’s cricket team, has been appointed as the new President of the Professional Golf Tour of India (PGTI). This new role represents a significant step for Kapil, who has also made a name for himself as an amateur golfer. At 65, Kapil was already serving as Vice President of the PGTI Board and was chosen unanimously to succeed H R Srinivasan, whose term has concluded.
Kapil, an avid golfer with a nearly scratch handicap at one point, expressed his honor at becoming PGTI President. He highlighted his long-standing association with the organization and his close friendships with fellow players. Golf has been a passion of his for over three decades, and he once aspired to represent India in the Asian Games when it was open only to amateurs.
As President, Kapil is committed to advancing the sport and has already been instrumental in attracting new sponsors and organizing high-profile events like the Kapil Dev Grant Thornton Invitational at the DLF Golf and Country Club, offering a prize of Rs 2 crore ($240,000).
Despite his busy schedule with cricket, Kapil finds relaxation on the golf course and aims to elevate the sport in India. He cherishes the opportunity to spend more time with his golfing friends and continue playing the sport he loves. Kapil’s illustrious cricket career, including leading India to the 1983 World Cup victory and setting numerous records, adds to his esteemed status in the sporting world.
