In the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 Super 8 match against South Africa on Monday, West Indies all-rounder Andre Russell surpassed former cricketer Dwayne Bravo to become the highest wicket-taker for the Caribbean team in T20 World Cup history.

Despite heroic performances by Roston Chase and Alzarri Joseph, South Africa extended their unbeaten run to seven matches and secured a semifinal spot with a three-wicket win over West Indies in Antigua. Russell bowled exceptionally well, taking two wickets for 19 runs in his four overs. These two wickets brought his total to 29 in T20 World Cup history, surpassing Bravo’s previous record of 27.

South Africa won the toss and chose to bowl first. West Indies struggled early, reduced to 5/2, but an 81-run partnership between Kyle Mayers (35 off 34 balls) and Roston Chase (52 off 42 balls) helped them recover. However, regular strikes by the Proteas bowlers restricted West Indies to 135/8 in 20 overs. Tabraiz Shamsi was the standout bowler for South Africa, taking 3/27, while Marco Jansen, Aiden Markram, Keshav Maharaj, and Kagiso Rabada each took a wicket.

In pursuit of 136, South Africa lost two early wickets. Rain interrupted play, reducing their target to 123 runs in 17 overs. Despite being at a precarious 110/7 in 15.2 overs, crucial runs from Tristan Stubbs (29 off 27 balls) and Heinrich Klaasen (22 off 10 balls) kept them in the game. Marco Jansen (21*) and Kagiso Rabada (5*) hit important boundaries, sealing the win with five balls to spare.
