Belagavi

Deputy Commissioner Nitesh Patil has strictly ordered the sugar factories to pay the pending payments of the farmers by June 25. He was speaking during the coordination meeting with the sugarcane farmers and representatives of sugar mills at the Deputy Commissioner’s office.

There are 28 sugar mills in Belagavi district and three of them have pending payments. The Deputy Commissioner instructed the representatives of the sugar factories to make payments to the farmers, along with a 15 percent interest rate as per the law.
Meanwhile, Patil asked the representatives of the factories to give a letter to the district administration promising to clear the payments by June 25. He cautioned the factories of seizing the sugar in the factory warehouses and the other machinery if they failed to fulfil the promise.
Deputy Commissioner also instructed the concerned officials to calculate the payable payment of the sugar mills adding the 15 percent interest. Earlier, the farmers under the banner of various farmers’ organisations staged a protest on the premises of the Deputy Commissioner’s office.
Protesters led by Shashikant Naik demanded the district administration take action against the Hiranyakeshi Sugar Factory in Sankeshwar, which held up the payments of the farmers for the past six months.
