Assam government will initiate an investigation on Wednesday into a security breach within the strong room of Nalbari district during the May 7 poll day, as stated in an official announcement. Principal Secretary of the Home and Political Department, B Kalyan Chakravarthy, has been tasked with conducting the probe concerning the security lapse during polling in Nalbari district, a part of the Barpeta Lok Sabha constituency.

The inquiry, scheduled to commence at 4 pm at the district headquarters on Wednesday, will involve the presence of Nalbari District Commissioner Varnali Deka, the magistrate overseeing the strong room, security personnel responsible for its supervision, and representatives of political parties who witnessed the breach. The directive for the inquiry was issued by the Deputy Secretary of the Home & Political Department, notifying the concerned officials and parties involved.

The investigation follows a complaint filed by Congress’ Barpeta candidate Deep Bayan to the Election Commission of India on May 14, prompting concerns over potential malpractices and tampering of EVM machines. The complaint stemmed from a police report filed by Deka on May 10, alleging an unidentified individual within the EVM receipt center demanded money. Despite efforts, the police have yet to identify the individual, while filmmaker Luit Kumar Barman, implicated in the incident, denied the allegations as false and fabricated.
