Chennaiyin FC’s captaincy has been extended by Ryan Edwards in a new contract, which will see him remain with the club until 2025, as announced on Sunday by the Indian Super League (ISL) team. The Liverpool-born defender, known for his leadership and impact on younger Indian players, becomes only the second foreign player retained by the club in four years, following Rafael Crivellaro. Edwards, appointed as club captain for the 2023/24 season, amassed 25 appearances across all competitions, contributing two goals and an assist. He earned admiration for his commitment, resilience, and imposing presence, both on and off the field.

Head coach Owen Coyle expressed his satisfaction with Edwards’ extension, highlighting his importance to the team’s dynamics and his popularity among the players. Coyle emphasized Edwards’ potential for further growth as a leader and player within Chennaiyin.

Before joining Chennaiyin FC, Edwards played for Scottish side Dundee United, where he made significant contributions over three seasons, garnering praise for his performances. Speaking about his contract extension, Edwards expressed his eagerness to continue contributing to the team’s success, aiming for silverware in the upcoming seasons.

Throughout his career, Edwards has demonstrated leadership qualities, notably captaining Blackburn FC’s youth team to the final of the 2011/12 FA Youth Cup. Since taking over as captain midway through the 2021/22 season, Edwards has led the team in 53 matches across all competitions, achieving notable results.
