This year, the Common University Entrance Test for Undergraduates (CUET-UG) and the National Eligibility Test (UGC-NET) will no longer require score normalization, according to UGC Chief Jagadesh Kumar. He explained that normalisation is unnecessary because the exams for each subject will be conducted in a single shift.

Normalisation is typically used to ensure that scores from different test sessions are comparable when the same exam is held over multiple shifts with varied questions. However, concerns have been raised by students who believe that this process can affect their final scores unfairly.

Kumar stated that the shift in exam structure allows for more exam centers, reducing the need for multiple sessions. Previously, we had to conduct tests over two or three days to accommodate students’ preferred exam centers. This year, by using Optical Mark Recognition (OMR) technology, a larger number of centers at schools and colleges will allow the tests to be held on the same day nationwide, he said.

The CUET-UG will be held from May 15 to 24, with 15 subjects being conducted in a pen-and-paper format and 48 subjects in an online format. The UGC-NET will also transition from Computer-Based Test (CBT) mode to pen and paper, scheduled for June 16. This change is expected to streamline the examination process and reduce confusion caused by score normalization.
