Well-known Magsaysay Award winning journalist P Sainath said that our priority should be social-oriented, pro-people journalism and not corporate journalism.
He spoke while inaugurating the Karnataka Union of Working Journalists’ (KUWJ) Endowment Fund award ceremony.
Indian journalism has its own history and heritage and they must never forget the tradition of telling the truth. He said that the corporate system, directly and indirectly, should be kept away from the scheme as much as possible.
It is an alarming fact that the ownership of the newspapers is held by the owners of the famous companies of the country. There are signs that this is damaging to journalism. These developments are likely to trouble the common man in the near future, he said.
Prof BK Ravi said that today’s journalism is in a dilemma. On the path of commercialisation, newspapers inevitably have to pay attention to profit margins. He said that this naturally raises the concern that somewhere social responsibility is being forgotten.
KUWJ State President Shivananda Tagaduru explained about the activities undertaken by the organisation for protection of newspapers and journalists.
Dinesh Goudagere, KUWJ District, SRS College President Lingareddy, IWRG President BV Mallikarjunaiah, General Secretary HB Madanagowda, Senior Journalist GN Mohan, State General Secretar GC Lokesh, office bearers were present.
25 senior journalists including Sanath Kumar Belagali, BM Basheer, CJ Manjula, V Venkatesh, Mohana Hegde were awarded the KUWJ Endowment Award.
