In a poignant display of selflessness, a couple from Puradamata village in Dakshina Kannada district turned their sorrow into a ray of hope by donating the organs of their brain-dead son. Tarun Balachandra, a 19-year-old working as a plasterer’s assistant in the city, suffered a tragic fall from the second floor of a building near Kengeri on December 19, leaving him critically injured. Rushed to Gleneagle Hospital, doctors confirmed his brain was non-responsive. In a remarkable act of compassion amid their grief, Tarun’s parents, Balachandra and Lata, chose to donate their son’s two kidneys, liver, and heart. The organs were successfully transplanted into recipients: two male patients aged 39 and 33 received the kidneys, a 35-year-old male received the liver, and a 49-year-old male was the recipient of Tarun’s heart. Expressing their profound loss, Chalachandra shared, Tarun was the backbone of our family. His sudden departure has left an irreplaceable void in our lives. Despite their grief, they found solace in the decision to donate his organs, hoping to keep their son alive through the lives of others. Sarala Anantraj, Chief Probation Consultant and Senior Coordinator of the Transplant Department at the hospital, commended the parents’ altruistic act, citing it as an exemplary gesture for society to emulate. The family’s gesture serves as a poignant reminder of the profound impact and hope that organ donation can bring amid tragedy, showcasing the tremendous generosity and empathy of the human spirit.
