City Struggles With Effective Implementation Of Ban On Printed Paper For Food Parcels

In Bengaluru, the ban on using printed paper for food item parcels faces challenges in execution due to a lack of coordination and awareness among officials from different departments. Despite the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) instructing against the use of printed paper for wrapping or storing food items, many vendors continue to use paper without adherence. This practice poses significant health risks, prompting a strict rule enforcement directive from FSSAI Chief Executive Officer Kamala Vardhana Rao in September. The directive warned of substantial fines for non-compliance, with joint monitoring by FSSAI and State Food Safety Competent Authorities. However, the city has yet to take decisive steps for rigorous enforcement. While larger establishments comply, smaller hotels and street vendors persist in using printed paper for items like fast food, bajji, samosa, vade, kebab, etc. Efforts should be made by local organizations and the health department, in collaboration with officials at various levels of the State Food Safety Competent Authority. Conducting awareness programs to discourage the use of printed paper for wrapping food items is essential for effective rule implementation. Currently, such initiatives are not adequately undertaken.
