In an extraordinary feat, Karnataka’s Stamp and Registration Department achieved a record-breaking revenue collection by registering more than 24,000 property-related documents in a single day, Wednesday. A staggering sum of Rs 312,84,53,840 was collected as stamp duty and registration fees across the state through its 256 sub-registration offices. This remarkable achievement marks a significant milestone for the department and has been attributed to the upcoming changes in property guide values set to take effect from October 1. Inspector-General of Registration and Commissioner of Stamps, Mamata BR, shared this incredible achievement with The New Indian Express correspondent. It’s worth noting that the previous record, set on September 22, stood at Rs 158.28 crore, with documents related to 15,936 properties being registered. The department had not previously surpassed the Rs 200 crore mark in revenue collection. The success of this initiative can be attributed in part to the Citizen-friendly Kaveri 2 software, as described by Mamata BR. This software enables most of the registration process to be completed online, allowing citizens to conveniently complete their transactions from the comfort of their homes, with only a brief visit to the Sub-Registrar’s office for around 10 minutes. Starting October 1, the guideline values of properties will witness a 30 percent increase, leading to a corresponding rise in stamp duty and registration fees. In anticipation of heightened activity, the department has extended the working hours of deputy registrars’ offices from 8 am to 8 pm from September 22 to September 30, including the typically non-working hours on Tuesday. Approximately 12,000 properties were registered on that day alone. Krishna Byre Gowda, the Revenue Minister, lauded this achievement, emphasizing that no other state has managed to collect such a substantial amount through property registration in a single day.
