BJP’s Sudheer Shetty and Sunitha have been elected as the Mayor and Deputy Mayor respectively for the 24th term of Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC). Mysuru Sub-Division Regional Commissioner Dr. GC Prakash conducted the election at Mangala Auditorium at 12 noon. The Mayor’s post was reserved for the general category and the Deputy Mayor’s post was reserved for a scheduled caste woman. Of the total 60 seats, the BJP has 44, the Congress 14 and two SDPI members. In the previous term, members of Mangaluru North assembly constituency were elected to the post of Mayor. This time, Mangaluru South constituency has got the Mayor’s post and Mangaluru North has got Deputy Mayor’s post. BJP’s Sudheer Shetty Kannur and Congress’ Naveen R D’Souza filed their nominations for the Mayor’s post. Naveen R D’Souza of the Congress got 14 votes in favour and 47 against, while two of the SDPI remained neutral. BJP’s Sudhir Shetty got 47 votes in favour and 14 against. The BJP has a clear majority in the Corporation and Kodiyal bail ward member Sudheer Shetty has been elected to the Mayor’s post with a majority. Sunitha of Panambur ward, the only Scheduled Caste member in the corporation, was elected unopposed to the post of Deputy Mayor. Bjp State President Nalin Kumar Kateel, MLAs Vedavyas Kamath and Bharat Shetty were present during the election and cast their votes in favour of the BJP candidate. At the same time, appointments were made to various standing committees.Sudheer Shetty was elected to the corporation for the third time. He has also served as the chief committee whip and chairman. He is also the General Secretary of the BJP’s district unit. Sudhir’s name had also cropped up during the Mayoral elections last year. The BJP, which had given priority to the Billava community, had accommodated Jayananda Anchan.
