Mangalore University is grappling with a significant enrollment shortfall for the 2024-25 academic year. Of the 42 Post Graduate (PG) programs across 28 departments, more than nine have yet to secure a single admission. Courses such as statistics, electronics, MEd, MSW, Geo-informatics, and material science are particularly affected, seeing no interest from students.
In response, the university has twice extended the application deadline-first to September 25 and then to October 10, but these measures have not sparked any notable surge in applications. With only two days remaining before the final deadline, the situation remains concerning.
Initially, the university had mandated that a department would be suspended if it failed to enroll at least 15 students. However, due to the current enrollment crisis, this requirement has been lowered to 10 students per department, in hopes of keeping the courses operational.
Despite receiving over 1,800 applications, only around 680 students have formally enrolled. While popular programs like MCom, Chemistry and Biotechnology have seen strong demand, MCom leading with the highest number of enrollments-many other courses romain critically under-enrolled.
University officials are hopeful for a last-minute influx of students to ensure that their full spectrum of academic offerings can continue uninterrupted.
