Karnataka Institute of Medical Science has started a Diabetes Care Unit at its OPD building. As part of the pilot project, the clinic will be opened every Thursday, and in this separate clinic, a team of specialists from various disciplines, including General Medicine, Surgery, Neurology, Paediatrics and Ophthalmology will work as per need. This will help diabetic patients be treated under one roof. According to sources, the KIMS Board of Management had planned to start a separate diabetic care unit five years ago but did not implement the project due to Covid-19. Now the project has taken off and due to this, diabetes patients can easily avail proper treatment. The clinic will help diabetes patients get timely treatment. It will provide medical treatment to poor patients in the North Karnataka  region. Many patients visited the clinic and were treated there. KIMS Director Ramalingappa Antartani told, the clinic has started functioning. General surgeons and doctors have been given the necessary training to treat diabetes patients. A separate team has been formed to encourage patients and create awareness regarding diabetes. Many doctors and technical staff have been trained. Now the clinic will be open once a week on Thursday for treatment. After assessing the response, there is a plan to open it twice a week or regularly, he said. BH Vasant, a patient, said the diabetes clinic was a long-pending demand, which has been fulfilled. Earlier, we used to visit other departments for treatment. Now, doctors from all these departments will be available in one clinic. The clinic will help the poor to get quality treatment. It should be opened daily in the days to come, he opined.
