Commemorating Sri Krishna Janmashtami, dahi handi celebrations were held at a grand level across the city, including Maratha Light Infantry Regimental Centre (MLIRC). Dahi handi is celebrated on the second day of Gokulashtami. This festivity is popular in Maharashtra and as the city is deeply influenced by neighbouring State’s culture, dahi handi is celebrated here in a grand manner. Dahi handi is a cultural sport, wherein youths make a human pyramid to smash an earthen pot full of curd, dangled at a height. The youths who participate in creating the human pyramid are called Govindas.   Human pyramids are made in almost every colony of the city. Some mandals have 40-50 years of history in making dahi-handi.  MLIRC jawans added colour to the festival by framing four-layer pyramid to smash the earthen pot filled with curds. Hundreds of people who witnessed the event splashed water on Govindas, while chantings of Govinda Govinda. Dahi handi events were organised at Tilakwadi by Gavali community, and events in Camp area and Maruti Galli grabbed the attention with four- and five-layer pyramids. Dahi handi is celebrated for many decades in all these three locations. This apart, the event at ISKCON temple in Shukrawar Peth held with pomp and gaiety.
