The Dakshina Kannada Bus Owners Association has joined hands with the City Police in spreading awareness among bus drivers and conductors.
The Association have directed bus drivers and conductors to ensure that all the buses from Nanthoor towards St Agnes should pass through Mallikatte, all the buses from State Bank to Pumpwell should stop at a bus stop situated a few metres away from Karavali Circle and that no bus staff or passengers should be seen standing on the footboard, they stated.
Loud music should not be played inside the bus, and the use of shrill horns is banned. All crew should compulsorily wear uniforms. Buses should stop only at bus stands. The safety of passengers should be a priority, the association maintained. The bus conductors have been told not to reject the Chalo card, and to behave politely with passengers.
This awareness campaign has been initiated following the tragic incident involving a bus conductor who lost his life due to a fall from a moving private city bus in Nanthoor on Tuesday. Following this incident, the Police have booked over 200 cases against footboard travel. City Police Commissioner Kuldeep Kumar R Jain said that the Police in association with the bus owners, are jointly taking up awareness programmes on safety, and enforcement of rules against footboard travel.
The bus owners have been asked to join the Police in such drives. During the awareness drive, we have asked the bus conductors and drivers to ensure that no one is allowed to travel on the footboard. In case they see anyone dangling from the bus by standing on the footboard, the bus driver should stop the bus and ensure that passengers get inside the bus, Police Commissioner said.
