The Karnataka Union of Working Journalists’ has requested Chief Minister Siddaramaiah to fulfil the demands of Journalists.
In a memorandum submitted to the Chief Minister, President Shivananda Tagadoor stated that the organisation has more than 8,000 members and has completed 91 years. The announcement in the election manifesto to set aside 500 crores for the welfare of Journalists is welcome. In this regard KUWJ congratulates the Government for showing concern by revising the pension of retired journalists to Rs 12,000.
In addition, the demands such as free bus pass should be provided to rural Journalists, Journalists should be covered under Yashasvani Insurance Scheme, conditions stipulated for pension to Journalists should be relaxed and simplied, it must be paid through the treasury as before, grants should be given for the construction of Journalists’ Bhavan at taluk level, Local bodies, Municipalities, City Councils, Metropolitan Corporation should provide premises / houses at 50 percent discount to Journalists, Rs 100 crore should be earmarked for the welfare and development fund of Journalists, advertisements should be released regularly to District, regional and state level newspapers and media, Rs 2 crore earmarked in the previous budget for press distributors has not been utilized. It should be managed by the Labour Department and the Press Distributors Welfare Fund should be increased, it is stated in the memorandum submitted to the Chief Minister.
