The city was filled with garbage following Deepavali festival. Waste piled up at Janata Bazaar, Siddaveerappana Peth, Keshwapur, Dajiban Peth, JC Nagar, and other major places in the city. The residents celebrated the festival for three days. The civic workers started clearing the waste on Sunday morning, and it is still going on. Decorative waste, raw waste, and materials used for the festival were discarded at various places.
The disposal of waste after festivals is a big problem for the corporation. It has been a tradition since the beginning to decorate all the houses and shops with colourful flowers, banana bunches, and garlands. Accordingly, on Thursday and Friday, puja was performed in houses, and on Friday-Saturday, puja was performed in shops. After the puja, all the waste is thrown in the dustbins and in some places, on the roadside.
Honnurappa Devageri, President of Pourakarmikara Sangha, said that the pourakarmikas are regularly involved in cleaning the city and also during the festival. We have to work during the festival also. A large quantity of waste was thrown in the city. However, cleaning is going on, he said.
BM Mallikarjun, Executive Engineer of Hubli-Dharwad Municipal Corporation’s solid waste management department, told that after the festival, it requires around three days to clean the city. However, the workers are removing the disposed waste at major places will be cleared, he assured.
