Karwar workshop highlights media’s role in governance

CH NEWS, KARWAR

Media organizations have an important role in informing people about Central and State government schemes and helping them access available benefits, Deputy Commissioner K. Lakshmi Priya said on Tuesday

. She was speaking at a “Vartalaapa” workshop for media representatives at the District Collector’s Office.

The workshop was organized by the Press Information Bureau, Bengaluru, along with the district administration, Zilla Panchayat and Information and Public Relations Department. Lakshmi Priya said departments must share information with citizens, while media support can ensure that details reach people across the district.

She said media reports also help officials identify public problems, especially in remote areas. Complaints appearing in newspapers and other media are checked through the district control room, after which concerned departments are asked to respond. Zilla Panchayat CEO Dr. Dileesh Shashi said media acts as a bridge between citizens and administration.

District Superintendent of Police Dr. Deepan M.N. said responsible reporting is important as misinformation, rumours and fake news can spread quickly. He urged journalists to verify facts before publishing information and appreciated their support in police awareness campaigns on cybercrime and drugs. Officials also provided updates on voter-list revision and youth association registration.

Additional Director General of Information G.S. Ravindra explained several Central schemes, including PM Kisan Samman Nidhi, crop insurance, Namo Drone Didi and fisheries programmes.

Other officials discussed forest conservation, tribal rights, women and child empowerment and financial inclusion. The workshop aimed to improve communication between departments, media and citizens, helping people understand welfare programmes and encouraging authorities to respond more quickly to public concerns across Uttara Kannada.
