Indian para-athlete Sharmila Dhankar created history at the 2026 Commonwealth Games by winning the women’s shot put F57 gold medal. She dedicated the achievement to her visually impaired mother, who supported her throughout her journey despite criticism.
Sharmila produced a season-best throw of 9.81m to become India’s first-ever para-athletics gold medallist at the Commonwealth Games. She said her mother’s encouragement gave her strength and helped her achieve a dream that once seemed difficult.
The victory ended India’s 20-year wait for a Commonwealth Games para-athletics medal and teammate Shilpa Shyla added another proud moment by securing bronze. Shilpa originally finished fourth with a personal best throw of 7.26m but moved onto the podium after Nigeria’s Eucharia Iyiazi was disqualified following review. The revised standings placed Sharmila first and Ghana’s Zinabu Issah second with 8.65m. Shilpa’s medal increased India’s tally and highlighted her resilience after losing her left leg at age four following an accident in Mysuru district.
Despite challenges, Shilpa completed education and became a teacher before choosing para-athletics. She showed determination and earned the bronze through consistent efforts. Sharmila said the medal belonged to India and hoped more athletes would succeed internationally. She also aimed for future victories at major events including the Olympics.
The historic double podium finish marked a major achievement for Indian para-athletics at the Games. Sharmila’s inspiring journey and Shilpa’s perseverance have encouraged many athletes to chase their goals with confidence.
