NEW DELHI
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) paid an emotional tribute to the historic 1983 World Cup victory, proudly calling it “the victory that inspired generations.” The nation enthusiastically celebrated the 43rd anniversary of its very first ODI World Cup title.
Taking to media, the BCCI recalled how legendary all-rounder Kapil Dev led an underdog Indian side to pull off one of the greatest upsets in sporting history. In the grand finale at Lord’s on June 25, 1983, India miraculously defended a modest total of 183 runs against the mighty, star-studded West Indies.
The West Indies, who had completely dominated by winning the previous two tournaments, were heavy favorites. Their fierce bowling attack bowled India out for 183, despite Kris Srikkanth top-scoring with 38 runs. However, the Indian bowlers fought back with unbelievable spirit. They completely dismantled the West Indies batting order, bowling them out for a mere 140 runs to seal a famous 43-run victory. Mohinder Amarnath was named Man of the Match for his brilliant, decisive spell of 3/12.
This magnificent breakthrough completely reshaped India’s sporting culture, transforming cricket from a regular sport into an absolute national obsession. Before this miracle, India had crashed out in the group stages of the 1975 and 1979 editions. Since that fateful day, India has grown into a global powerhouse, later winning a second trophy in 2011 under MS Dhoni and finishing as runners-up in 2023 under Rohit Sharma.
