MLA Prabhu B. Chavan has called upon private companies involved in solar energy projects to ensure that farmers receive fair compensation for lands acquired for development purposes. He expressed concern over reports that some companies were offering lower rates to landowners and taking advantage of farmers’ lack of awareness during the acquisition process.
The MLA made these remarks while inspecting the Power Grid substation project site in the Malegaon–Chimmegaon region of Kamalanagar taluk on Saturday. Reviewing the ongoing works, Chavan said that while large-scale infrastructure projects are essential for economic growth and regional development, farmers who contribute their land should not be made to suffer financial losses.
“A solar park spread across nearly 25,000 acres is being developed alongside the Power Grid substation. Several private companies are directly approaching farmers for land acquisition. It has come to my notice that some landowners are not receiving adequate compensation,” he said.
Chavan noted that acquisition activities are underway in villages such as Murki, Thana Kushnoor, Chikli (U), Chimmegaon, and nearby areas. He emphasized that no injustice should be done to farmers and urged companies to maintain transparency in compensation practices.
Referring to complaints received from local farmers, the MLA pointed out disparities in compensation rates. He claimed that farmers in neighbouring Maharashtra were reportedly receiving around ₹50,000 per acre for similar projects, while farmers in the region were being offered only ₹30,000 to ₹35,000 per acre. He urged companies to provide equitable and reasonable compensation to local landowners.
During the visit, Chavan also reviewed the progress of the Power Grid substation project and directed engineers and contractors to complete the work within the stipulated timeframe while maintaining quality standards. He stressed the need for proper curing and strict quality control measures to avoid future complaints.
Describing the substation as a major Central Government initiative, Chavan said the project is being developed over 164 acres at a cost of ₹2,360 crore and is nearly 80 percent complete. He expressed hope that Prime Minister Narendra Modi would inaugurate the facility upon completion.
The MLA also highlighted the project’s contribution to local employment, noting that a majority of non-technical jobs, as well as equipment rentals, have benefited local residents and businesses. Several project officials, local leaders, and villagers were present during the inspection.
