MP Brijesh Chowta criticises state financial management system

Intro

BJP MP Brijesh Chowta has alleged that Karnataka’s government has pushed the state into rising debt levels.

Mangaluru

Mangaluru MP Brijesh Chowta on Wednesday alleged that the Karnataka government led by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has pushed the state into a severe debt burden over the past three years. Addressing a press conference in Mangaluru, he said Karnataka, once known for fiscal discipline, is now facing worsening financial stress.

Chowta claimed that the state’s fiscal situation has deteriorated significantly and cited observations from the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) report to support his allegations. He also criticised the government’s ‘Sadhana Samavesha’ programme, questioning its justification amid rising debt levels.

He alleged that key welfare and development schemes have been poorly implemented, pointing to delays in housing projects under PM Awas Yojana and pending subsidy payments under the Ksheeradhare scheme for dairy farmers. He also claimed that large funds, including a corpus fund of ₹15,000 crore, were diverted without clear accountability.

The MP further alleged delays in salary payments and a slowdown in recruitment across departments, accusing the government of financial mismanagement. He also criticised the use of CSR funds in certain sectors and claimed that governance in Dakshina Kannada district was being affected due to resource constraints.

Responding to questions on rising fuel prices, he attributed the increase to global factors and said citizens understood the broader economic context. On welfare schemes, he clarified that the BJP supports such initiatives but argued that Karnataka’s fiscal stress stems from poor financial planning and excessive borrowing without asset creation.

The allegations come amid ongoing political debate between the ruling Congress and opposition BJP over the state’s fiscal health and development priorities.
