Stalin Accepts Defeat
Chennai
Outgoing Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M. K. Stalin on Tuesday acknowledged his party’s electoral defeat, stating that the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam has faced both victories and setbacks in its long political journey, a day after actor-politician Vijay led his newly formed Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam to a sweeping win in the 2026 Assembly elections.
In a statement shared on the social media platform X, Stalin reflected on his party’s history, emphasizing resilience in the face of electoral setbacks. He noted that the DMK has governed Tamil Nadu multiple times and has experienced every phase of political life, including defeats. According to him, the true test lies in staying committed to the party’s ideology regardless of outcomes.
Stalin, who assumed office as Chief Minister in 2021, suffered a significant personal setback as well, losing his Kolathur constituency—considered his stronghold—to TVK candidate VS Babu. This marked his first electoral defeat in over three decades, ending a long streak of victories since he first became a legislator in 1989.
Following the election results, Stalin submitted his resignation to Governor R. N. Ravi, formally stepping down from his position. Despite the loss, he maintained that the support base of the DMK remains strong, pointing out that the vote share difference between the DMK alliance and the victorious TVK was relatively narrow.
Taking a subtle dig at the new entrant, Stalin highlighted that Vijay’s party secured only a marginally higher number of votes compared to the DMK-led alliance. He stated that the vote share gap stood at just over three percent, while the DMK alliance garnered approximately 15.4 million votes statewide.
The election marked a dramatic political shift in Tamil Nadu, with the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam emerging as the single largest party by winning 108 out of 234 seats. The DMK, in contrast, secured 59 seats, reflecting a significant decline from its previous position.
Despite the setback, Stalin reiterated that the trust of the people remains intact and that the party will continue its ideological journey. His remarks signal a determination within the DMK to regroup and remain a key force in the state’s political landscape.
