After recent demolitions, another key flyover faces removal in east Bengaluru
BENGALURU
After dismantling the Jayadeva Flyover and marking Delmia Flyover for removal, Bengaluru is set to lose yet another flyover, this time at the busy IOC Junction in the eastern corridor.
The Bengaluru Smart Infrastructure Limited has identified a contractor to construct a ₹436-crore elevated rotary flyover at the junction, replacing the existing structure built by the Railways in 2001-02. The move is aimed at addressing long-standing congestion and improving connectivity to key transport hubs.
However, the demolition is expected to disrupt traffic significantly, especially along Dodda Banaswadi Road, Byappanahalli Road and Kammanahalli Road, which already witness heavy vehicular movement. Officials said a detailed traffic management plan will be drawn up in coordination with multiple agencies before work begins.
The project is designed to ease bottlenecks and provide seamless access to the Sir M. Visvesvaraya Terminal, one of the city’s busiest railway stations. Since its opening in 2022, the terminal has faced criticism over poor last-mile connectivity due to narrow approach roads and limited access points.
Officials noted that the new rotary flyover, along with a proposed railway overbridge on Byappanahalli Road connecting to Old Madras Road, will improve access from multiple directions and reduce congestion in surrounding areas such as Maruthi Seva Nagar and Kammanahalli.
The project cost has risen from an initial estimate of ₹263 crore in 2023 due to design changes, GST additions and expansion of scope, including a 1.5-km stretch from Maruthi Seva Nagar Road to segregate local and through traffic.
With multiple railway lines in the vicinity and involvement of K-RIDE, execution is expected to be complex. Work orders are likely to be issued soon, marking another major transformation in the city’s evolving infrastructure landscape.
