JDS leader Nikhil Kumaraswamy on Wednesday accused Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar of going back on his promise to farmers by failing to constitute the proposed committee on the controversial Bidadi Township project.
Addressing reporters, Nikhil alleged that the Chief Minister had assured farmers that a committee would be formed to examine the township proposal, but no such committee has been constituted so far. He claimed the government’s inaction showed that it had chosen to stand against farmers instead of protecting their interests.
According to Nikhil, the Chief Minister announced the formation of the committee soon after former Prime Minister H.D. Deve Gowda declared that he would launch a Satyagraha opposing the township project. However, on the very same day, the government issued a notification for acquiring land in four villages for the proposed township.
He questioned the government’s intent, asking why it had failed to clarify the committee’s terms of reference or identify its members. Nikhil alleged that the announcement was merely an attempt to pacify protesting farmers without any genuine commitment to resolving their concerns.
The JDS leader said the government’s actions reflected a contradictory approach, with assurances being made publicly while land acquisition proceedings continued simultaneously.
He urged the State Government to immediately constitute the promised committee, ensure transparency in its functioning and hold meaningful consultations with affected farmers before proceeding with the project.
