Mandya court sentences man in grandmother killing case

Mandya

A Mandya court has sentenced a man to seven years of imprisonment in a case related to the death of his grandmother, after concluding that the offence amounted to culpable homicide and not murder.

According to the case details, the accused Harish, aged 36 and a resident of Kaka Masjid area in Mandya town, was living with his father Ramakrishna and grandmother Kempamma in a rented house. Police said Harish was unemployed, and his grandmother often advised him to go to work, which led to frequent arguments at home.

On June 22, 2024, while his father had gone to work as usual, Harish allegedly got into an argument with his grandmother after she again advised him to find employment. In a sudden outburst, he reportedly attacked her with a knife, causing fatal injuries near her neck and ear.

After the incident, Harish informed his father through a phone call and later surrendered at Mandya Central Police Station with the weapon used in the crime. A murder case was initially registered under IPC Section 302, and a charge sheet was filed after investigation.

The Second Additional District and Sessions Court, after examining evidence, ruled that the act falls under Section 304 Part 1 of the IPC. Judge Sayedunnisa sentenced the accused to seven years of imprisonment and imposed a fine of Rs. 50,000.

Public prosecutor K. Nagaraj represented the state in the case. The court’s decision was based on witness statements and investigation records presented during the trial.
