Belagavi hotels protest sudden LPG price hike

BELAGAVI

Hotel owners in Belagavi have expressed strong anger after the recent increase in commercial LPG cylinder prices and PNG gas rates affecting daily operations across the city. They said the price hike will heavily impact small and big hotels, forcing them to reconsider food prices soon. The Hotel Owners Association said LPG prices increased by about Rs 993, while PNG gas also rose, creating serious concern among business owners.

Association president Ajay Pai said the rise in costs of fuel, cooking oil, and other items has already affected the industry badly. He said the latest gas price hike of nearly 35 percent has left hotel owners with no choice but to increase menu prices. However, he added that owners will first hold meetings before deciding new rates and updating menu cards and online price lists. Many hotel owners are also considering switching to alternative fuels like biomass, electricity, and diesel to reduce dependence on LPG gas.

They said they may still be forced to raise prices if costs continue to rise in the coming weeks across markets. Hotel operators also complained about rising PNG gas prices, saying rates differ from city to city without clear explanation from suppliers. They pointed out that Bengaluru and Davangere have lower PNG prices compared to Belagavi, calling it unfair treatment for local businesses. Small hotel owners warned that sudden price hikes could reduce customers and even force some small establishments to shut down permanently. They urged the government to intervene and reduce gas prices to protect both consumers and the struggling hotel industry.

Association members said they will meet in coming days to decide on revised food prices and possible new menu changes. Meanwhile, canteen owners said they are also facing heavy pressure and may be forced to close if costs keep rising. They said small eateries will be the most affected and requested immediate relief measures from authorities. Business leaders said the situation is critical and warned that continuous hikes in fuel prices could damage the entire hospitality sector in Belagavi city. They demanded quick government action to stabilize prices and support hotels.
